You can now query Firestore using the OR operator. Your application may often need to compare one or more fields with two or more values and select the documents that match at least one of the values. This is an extension to the IN operator which could be used to compare multiple values with the same field. 

For example, if you’re searching for information about cats and dogs, you could use the OR operator to combine the two search terms into a single query:

‘cats = black OR dogs = brown’

This would return results that include information about both black cats and brown dogs.

Firestore now supports OR queries via server and client SDKs, with streaming and offline compatibility.

Use Cases

Support for OR operator now enables you to utilize Firestore for building applications which need to filter one or more fields with two or more values using any of our existing query constructs. 

Examples 

Let’s say you are running an employee management portal on Firestore and you want the ability to filter on a number of criteria like Title, Organization, Location, Tenure etc., you can now easily utilize OR to be able to do it.

Nested ORs can be useful when you need to check multiple conditions, but they can also be difficult to read and understand. It is important to use them sparingly and to only use them when necessary.

OR operator can also be used on all our existing query constructs like querying across Collection Groups, or in combination with existing operators like COUNT(). 

Let’s take an example of Collection Groups called Landmarks, you can now use OR operator to filter collections within the group

Introducing the Hive-BigQuery open-source Connector

In our work on the Big Data solutions architecture, BigQuery, and Dataproc teams, we talk to a lot of customers who are interested in migrating all or part of their data warehouse from Apache Hive to BigQuery, but who have hit some speed bumps along the way. To help, we are proud to announce the public GA release of the Hive-BigQuery Connector.

With this open-source connector, you now can let Apache Hive workloads read and write to BigQuery and BigLake tables. The underlying data can be stored either in BigQuery native storage or in open-source data formats on Cloud Storage. Whether you’re fully migrating from Apache Hive to BigQuery or you want both systems to coexist and interact together, this new connector covers a wide range of use cases.

What is the Hive-BigQuery Connector?

If you’ve run Hadoop or Spark workloads on Google Cloud, you should already be familiar with the Cloud Storage Connector and the Apache Spark SQL connector for BigQuery. The former implements the Hadoop Compatible File System (HCFS) API that lets you store and access data files in Cloud Storage, Google Cloud’s highly-scalable and highly-available object storage service. The latter implements the Spark SQL Data Source API to allow reading BigQuery tables into Spark’s dataframes and writing DataFrames back into BigQuery.

Similarly, the Hive-BigQuery connector implements the Hive StorageHandler API to allow Hive workloads to integrate with BigQuery and BigLake tables. While Hive’s execution engine still handles all compute operations such as aggregates and joins, the connector manages all interactions with the data layer in BigQuery, whether the underlying data is stored in BigQuery native storage or in Cloud Storage buckets via a BigLake connection.

The following diagram illustrates how the Hive-BigQuery connector fits in the architecture:

For its part, Apache Hive is one of the most popular open-source data warehouses, and provides an SQL-like interface to query data stored in various databases and file systems that integrate with Apache Hadoop. Over time Hive evolved from using HDFS on-premises as its exclusive data storage layer, to using cloud storage services. And now, thanks to this new connector, Hive integrates with native storage solutions like BigQuery, simplifying migration.

Migrating a data warehouse to the cloud is a complex process, but it can offer significant benefits, including:

Reduced costs: pay only for the resources you use

Increased scalability: easily scale up or down to meet your evolving needs

Improved reliability: leverage redundant, highly-available systems

Enhanced security: encrypt data in transit and at rest and implement granular access control

Expanded capabilities: integrate directly or indirectly with a vast array of Google Cloud native tools and solutions such as:

BigQuery’s materialized views and BI Engine for increased performance and efficiency

Pub/Sub to transport data with low-latency

Dataflow to process data at scale in batch or streaming mode

Vertex AI to build, deploy, and scale machine learning models

and many, many more

Google Cloud offers the BigQuery Migration Service as a comprehensive solution to accelerate migration from your Hive data warehouse to BigQuery. It includes free-to-use tools that help you with each phase of migration, including assessment and planning, data transfer, and data validation. Two of those tools, the BigQuery batch SQL translator and interactive SQL translator, enable you to translate your Hive queries to BigQuery’s own ANSI-compliant SQL syntax so you can then run those queries natively with BigQuery execution engine.

The new Hive-BigQuery connector offers one additional option: You can keep your original queries in their HiveQL dialect, continue to run those queries with the Hive execution engine on your cluster, but let those queries access data migrated to BigQuery and BigLake tables.

Here’s how the Connector assisted Flipkart’s data lake migration to Google Cloud:

Use cases

The Hive-BigQuery Connector can help you in at least the following core use cases:

Ensure continuity of operations during a wholesale migration. Imagine you decide to move your entire Hive data warehouse to BigQuery and you intend to eventually translate all of your existing Hive queries to BigQuery’s SQL dialect. You expect that the migration will take a significant amount of time due to the sheer size of your data warehouse and the large number of connected applications. You need to ensure smooth continuity of operations during the migration period. To do this, you can first move your data to BigQuery then let your original Hive queries access that data through the Connector while you gradually translate them to BigQuery’s own ANSI-compliant SQL dialect. Once the migration is complete, you can use BigQuery exclusively and retire Hive altogether.

Use BigQuery for some, but not all, data warehouse needs. With the Hive-BigQuery Connector, you can choose to continue using Hive for most workloads and only use BigQuery for certain workloads that you think would benefit from specific BigQuery features like, for example, BI Engine or BigQuery ML. For this use case, you can use the Connector to unify the two environments by letting Hive join its own tables with the tables managed by BigQuery.

Maintain a full open-source software (OSS) stack. Let’s say you want to avoid any potential vendor lock-in and decide to continue using a full OSS stack for your data warehouse. You migrate your data in its original OSS format (e.g. Avro, Parquet or ORC) to Cloud Storage and continue using Hive to execute and process your queries in Hive’s own SQL dialect. For this use case, you can use the Connector to augment your OSS stack foundation by leveraging some BigLake and BigQuery features such as metadata caching for query performance, or Data Loss Prevention, column-level access control, and dynamic data masking for security and governance at scale.

Features

The Connector’s public preview release already ships with many features, including:

Running queries with MapReduce and Tez execution engines

Creating and deleting BigQuery tables from Hive

Joining BigQuery and BigLake tables with Hive tables

Fast reads from BigQuery tables using the Storage Read API streams and the Apache Arrow format

Two methods for writing data to BigQuery:

Direct writes using the BigQuery Storage Write API in pending mode. Use this method for workload that requires low write latency like near real-time dashboards with short refresh time windows.

Indirect writes by staging temporary Avro files to Cloud Storage then loading those files into the destination table using the Load Job API. This method is cheaper than the direct method, since BigQuery load jobs are free. However, it is slower, so it should only be used for workloads that aren’t time critical.

Accessing BigQuery time-partitioned and clustered tables. Here’s an example defining the relation between a Hive table and a table that is natively partitioned and clustered in BigQuery:

Scheduling reports in Looker Studio helps teams predictably and reliably distribute insights to business users in the flow of work and workflows where they spend their time. This helps to foster a data culture, making information more actionable and contextual, and enabling cross-team collaboration. Today, we are introducing two new capabilities in Looker Studio scheduling: the ability to apply distinct filter conditions to reports, and to create and manage multiple schedules within a report. These enhancements will help data teams distribute insights efficiently and make them even more targeted.

Schedule Filters lets you apply specific filter values while creating or editing a schedule, ensuring recipients see the intended filtered view in their delivered report. The Filters section of the Schedule delivery window shows all filters applied to the report along with their default values. You can now modify the filter values for a schedule and they will be applied to the schedule delivery. For example, you might schedule a report to multiple regional teams and apply location- or region-based filters for different sets of recipients.

Schedule Filters is now generally available to all Looker Studio users.
Multiple schedules lets you create multiple schedules within a Looker Studio report and manage them in a single view. You can now schedule and deliver the same report to different recipients, based on a variety of criteria such as delivery cadence, filter values and more. For example, a retail store manager might want to create different email schedules for a category performance report to different suppliers filtered based on their product category.

For an already created schedule, you can also now send a one-time instant delivery using the Send now option from the list view of schedules. You can also toggle the state of a schedule between active and inactive if you wish to temporarily pause delivery.

We continue to bring the latest advancements in AI technology to make our data cloud services even more intelligent. The new BigQuery ML inference engine, for example, allows you to run predictions not only with popular models formats directly in BigQuery, but also using remotely hosted models and Google’s state-of-the-art pretrained models. 

Then there’s BigLake, which lets you work with data of any type, in any location. This allowed us to deliver object tables, a new table type that provides a structured interface for unstructured data. Additionally, support for Apache Iceberg through BigLake is now generally available, so you can build a unified data and AI platform where multiple engines spanning analytics and ML/AI runtimes work seamlessly over a single copy of data. 

And now, the models you create in BigQuery using BigQuery ML are now instantly visible in Vertex AI model registry. Once in the model registry, you can then deploy them to Vertex AI endpoints for real-time serving, use Vertex AI pipelines to monitor and train models, and view detailed explanations for your predictions through BigQuery ML and Vertex AI integration. 

Priceline plans to deploy Google Cloud’s generative AI technologies to enable customers  to engage with a new, generative AI-powered chatbot and to receive personalized offerings when searching for hotels worldwide. By leveraging BigQuery, Looker, and Recommendations AI, TIME has gone from zero to two million connected users on time.com, enabling a 360-degree view of their audiences to create deeper relationships with them.

Solution details

Harmonya builds and maintains data pipelines that process massive amounts of data, training and serving machine learning models on top of the BigQuery data warehouse used throughout the organization. BigQuery’s integration with other Google Cloud components and pay-per-use model enables near-limitless scalability for data processing, providing significant value that allows Harmonya to focus on bringing value to its customers. Below is an example illustrating the data access model and deployment model between Harmonya’s internal environment and the customer-facing multi-tenant environment on the right side of the diagram.

The above diagram shows that Harmonya’s stack is split into two separate environments. The first is an internal environment (left side, yellow background) independent of Harmonya’s customers and their data. There, the Harmonya Product Language is created, starting (from left to right) with scheduling data acquisition tasks, querying the current state of the normalized product data vs. the scrape-state DB and deciding which new scrape tasks should be performed. 

Then, Cloud Functions are triggered to gather the relevant data from the web and store the raw results in Cloud Storage. From there, the process of the Harmonya Graph creation takes place, where products are clustered into a consistent view, and relations between products are discovered. Following that process, a set of NLP models are used to extract any meaningful concepts related to the products forming a detailed taxonomy.

The second environment (right side, red background) is a multi-tenant environment where each customer has their own complete separation of resources, ensuring nothing is being shared between any two customers of Harmonya.

The processing starts with a customer sharing raw point-of-sale data point with Harmonya. This data is processed using BigQuery in a streamlined and scalable way and merged with a snapshot of the Harmonya Language, relying on BigQuery’s capability to join data between separate projects. The merged dataset is then processed in Harmonya’s data pipelines, running ML processing to generate customer-specific insights, stored in Cloud SQL for real-time serving in Harmonya’s SaaS based application, running on Node.js and accessed by customers online at https://app.harmonya.com.

On top of that, BigQuery’s flexible scheme allows it to store various data types and query them in a dynamic fashion. Harmonya stores a mixture of structured and semi-structured json files within the same tables in BigQuery, simplifying data ingestion and allowing for a wide variety of use-cases with less data duplication.

How PLAID put the ‘real’ in real-time user analytics with Bigtable

Editor’s note: Today we hear from PLAID, the company behind KARTE, a customer experience platform (CxP) that helps businesses provide real-time personalized and seamless experiences to their users. PLAID recently re-architected its real-time user analytics engine using Cloud Bigtable, achieving latencies within 10 milliseconds. Read on to learn how they did it. 

Here at PLAID, we rely on many Google Cloud products to manage our data in a wide variety of use cases: AlloyDB for PostgreSQL for relational workloads, BigQuery for enterprise data warehousing, and Bigtable, an enterprise-grade NoSQL database service. Recently, we turned to Bigtable again to help us re-architect our core customer experience platform — a real-time user analytics engine we call “Blitz.” 

To say we ask a lot of Blitz is understatement: our high-traffic environment receives over 100,000 events per second, which Blitz needs to process within a few hundred milliseconds end-to-end. In this blog post, we’ll share how we re-architected Blitz with Bigtable and achieved truly real-time analytics under heavy write traffic. We’ll delve into the architectural choices and implementation techniques that allowed us to accomplish this feat, namely, implementing a highly scalable, low-latency distributed queue.

What we mean by real-time user analytics

But first, let’s discuss what we mean when we say ‘real-time user analytics’. In a real-time user analytics engine, when an event occurs for a user, different actions can be performed based on event history and user-specific statistics. Below is an example of an event data and a rule definition that filters to a specific user for personalized action.

This is pseudo-code for a rule to verify whether “userId-xxx” is a user who is a “member”, has an average purchase price of 10,000 yen or more in a year, had a session count of 10 or more last week, but who purchased little to nothing.

When people talk about real-time analytics, they usually mean near-real-time, where statistics can be seconds or even minutes out-of-date. However, being truly real-time requires that user statistics are always up-to-date, with all past event histories reflected in the results available to the downstream services. The goal is very simple, but it’s technically difficult to keep user statistics up-to-date — especially in a high-traffic environment with over 100,000 events per second and required latency within a few hundred milliseconds. 

Our previous architecture

Our previous analytics engine consisted of two components: a real-time analytics component (Track) and a component that updates user statistics asynchronously (Analyze).

The key points of this architecture are:

In the real-time component (Track), the user statistics generated in advance from the key-value store are read-only, and no writing is performed to it.

In Analyze, streaming jobs roll up events over specific time windows.

However, we wanted to meet the following strict performance requirements for our distributed queue:

High scalability – The queue must be able to scale with high-traffic event numbers. During peak daytime hours, the reference value for the write requests is about 30,000 operations per second, with a write data volume of 300 MiB/s.

Low latency that achieves both fast writes and reads within 10 milliseconds.

But the existing messaging services could not meet both high-scalability and low-latency requirements simultaneously — see Figure 4 below.

Our new real-time analytics architecture

Based on the technical challenges explained above, Figure 5 below shows the architecture after the revamp. Changes from the existing architecture include:

We divided the real-time server into two parts. Initially, the frontend server is responsible for writing events to the distributed queue.

The real-time backend server reads events from the distributed queue and performs analytics.

In order to meet both our scalability and latency goals, we decided to use Bigtable, which we already used as our low-latency key-value store, to implement our distributed queue. Here’s the specific method we used.

Bigtable is mainly known as a key-value store that can achieve latencies in the single-digit milliseconds and be scaled horizontally. What caught our attention is the fact that performing range scans in Bigtable that specify the beginning and end of row keys is also fast.

The specific schema for the distributed queue can be described as follows:

The key point is the event timestamp added at the end. This allows us to perform range scans by specifying the start and end of the event timestamps.

Furthermore, we were able to easily implement a feature to delete old data from the queue by setting a time-to-live (TTL) using Bigtablegarbage collection feature.

By implementing these changes, the real-time analytics backend server was able to ensure that the user’s statistics remain up-to-date, regardless of any unreflected events. 

Additional benefits of Bigtable

Scalability and low latency weren’t the only things that implementing a distributed queue with Bigtable brought to our architecture. It was also  cost-effective and easy to manage.

Cost efficiency

Thanks to the excellent throughput of the SSD storage type and a garbage collection feature that keeps the amount of data constant by deleting old data, we can operate our real-time distributed queue at a much lower cost than we initially anticipated. In comparison to running the same workload on Pub/Sub, our calculations show that we operate at less than half the cost.

Less management overhead

From an infrastructure operation perspective, using the Bigtable auto-scaling feature reduces our operational cost. In case of a sudden increase in requests to the real-time queue, the Bigtable cluster can automatically scale out based on CPU usage. We have been operating this real-time distributed queue for over a year reliably with minimal effort.

Supercharging our real-time analytics engine

In this blog post, we shared our experience in revamping our core real-time user analytics engine, Blitz, using Bigtable. We successfully achieved a consistent view of the user in our real-time analysis engine under high traffic conditions. The key to our success was the innovative use of Bigtable to implement a distributed queue that met both our high scalability and low latency requirements. By leveraging the power of Bigtable low-latency key-value store and its range scan capabilities, we were able to create a horizontally scalable distributed queue with latencies within 10ms.

We hope that our experience and the architectural choices we made can serve as a valuable reference for global engineers looking to enhance their real-time analytics systems. By leveraging the power of Bigtable, we believe that businesses can unlock new levels of performance and consistency in their real-time analytics engines, ultimately leading to better user experiences and more insightful decision-making.

There are many, many aspects to proper optimization so we won’t bog you down with too many details. Instead, let’s focus on the fundamentals:

Improve website performance: the faster it loads and the easier your website is to navigate, the better. It’s all about the UX (user experience). There are many different technical SEO tasks that occur in the back-end of the website that are critical for improving the overall health and performance of your website – all of which contribute to your SEO.

AI Can help with content creation

Each piece of content that you associate with your brand and business must be created with a clear intention: to serve your audience and make their lives easier.

The more high-value content you create, the more opportunities you have to rank higher in Google. This is because it builds your relevancy in your industry – while also establishing your authority.

There are also a number of benefits of using AI to help with content generation. Tools like Ryte.me, ChatGPT and Copy.AI can help considerably.

However, it is important to properly edit your content instead of just mindlessly relying on AI. You need to read Google’s spam guidelines on using AI-generated content, which read:

“To be eligible to appear in Google web search results (web pages, images, videos, news content, or other material that Google finds from across the web), content shouldn’t violate Google Search’s overall policies or the spam policies listed on this page.”

In other words, it is okay to use AI-created content. However, it shouldn’t look like spam.

For every link that points to your website from other reputable, industry-relevant websites, it essentially counts as a ‘vote of confidence’.

The more links you have, clearly the more authoritative and trustworthy your website is.

For example, if you write a blog post in so much depth that other marketers and websites invariably share and link to the post, Google is going to assume that it must be very interesting. As a result, they will reward you with more visibility.
